The Waka Taurapa normally sits vertically at the stern of a great Waka Taua. The Taurapa is an integral part of a waka as it connects to the Tauihu (bow) and has a balancing influence on the water.

It symbolises today those in authority, leadership, people who steer the waka influencing those around them.
