This piece has Pāua inlay set in the eyes and belongs of the Meremere or short combat weapons group. Patu is a plain, but very lethal club, particularly when made of greenstone (ponamu or jade). Patu means ‘to pierce and chop’, and was used with great skill and dexterity during battle.
